A free linux based operating system for your computer. It is very good for newbies in the linux world, with many features, and a major update once every 6 months. If you want to try linux I would suggest Ubuntu, personally I used it 2 years before I got rid of my computer I had it on. If you just want to try it out Ubuntu can also be run straight from a cd or memory stick without any installation or alteration to your computer.
